Building Community

Los Angeles Community Garden Council

butterfly The Los Angeles Community Garden Council (LACGC) partners with 38 community gardens in LA County to take care of the business side of gardening and give you more time to get dirty in the garden! We also offer gardening advice and workshops to more than 125 community gardens in LA County. Our gardens include:

  • Traditional community gardens where people rent a plot to grow their own fresh produce
  • Educational gardens where we teach gardening, landscaping, nutrition and cooking
  • Urban farms where volunteers grow vegetables for local markets and people in need

earth The Los Angeles Community Garden Council’s mission is to strengthen communities by building new and supporting existing community gardens where every person in Los Angeles County can grow healthy food in their neighborhood We envision a garden network for Los Angeles where people of all ages live healthy, active lives in a clean environment by growing fresh food. This network creates and fosters the meeting of people from diverse cultures to share the best growing techniques and urban agriculture practices, promotes social and economic justice, reduces household expenses, provides job training and beautifies our community.

Digging-In Against Diabetes

The DAD project is a series of educational workshops designed to inspire men with diabetes to eat healthily and exercise in order to reduce their dependence on diabetes medication and to get in shape. The workshops, to be held in a community garden in September and November 2015, will include inspirational words from Teague and other athletes, an introduction to gardening & nutrition, soil preparation/planting, composting, chronic disease management and reversal through diet and exercise. The project is seeking funds to make this program available at no cost to committed men from lower-income neighborhoods in Los Angeles who will benefit from this the most!
