The DAD Project

PrintWhy DAD?

The Digging-In Against Diabetes (DAD) project was founded by LACGC Board Member, Teague Weybright, who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in August 2014. He is a 43-year old Dad of two girls in elementary school. Teague does not fit the stereo-typical image of a person with diabetes: he is 6’0” tall and weighs 165 pounds. Throughout his life, he has been extremely active in sports including baseball and basketball. As an adult, he has competed in running events regularly. He and his family grow most of their own food in community gardens in Santa Monica. Through the DAD project, Teague hopes to inspire men and teenage boys with diabetes to eat healthily and exercise so that they can reduce their dependence on insulin and get in shape!

About DAD

The DAD project consists of six two-hour workshops for men with diabetes. The workshops will take place in a community garden on Saturday mornings starting in 2016! Let us know if you are
interested in joining!

  1. Inspirational Words from Teague and other Athletes
  2. Introduction to Gardening & Nutrition
  3. Soil Preparation and Planting
  4. Chronic Disease Management and Reversal through Diet and Exercise
  5. Pest Management, Composting, and the Environment
  6. Harvesting and the Benefits of Regular Exercise

Participants will be encouraged to walk or bike to the workshops. Each workshop will end with a 1-mile walk or run in the neighborhood. Participants will be invited to attend optional exercise activities between workshops including hikes, runs, swims, and bike-rides.

The program will culminate in a marathon to celebrate strength and determination in the face of Diabetes!

How You Can Help!

We need your support to make this program available at no cost to committed men from lower-income neighborhoods in Los Angeles who will benefit from this the most! We need to raise $14,060 in funds from 1,000 individuals — this is just $14.06 per person – in order to make this program a reality!  Donate Now
