Meet Crenshaw Community Garden!

Founded in the 1970s, Crenshaw Community Garden thrives in one of LA’s most densely populated neighborhoods. The 36 plots are a patchwork of crops from around the world: peanuts, Korean pumpkins and greens, taro, sesame leaf, garbanzo beans, and fairy squash grow alongside Jerusalem artichokes, sweet potatoes, and chard.

On a recent Saturday morning, Garden Manager Danila Oder was mentoring a young gardener while her family harvested lettuce. Jesus Rincon proudly showed his frjoles de milpa twisting around 7-foot corn stalks and sampled the fruit from a nearby pineapple guava tree. Another gardener left a collection of canned goods and packaged breads to share on the picnic table.

In fall 2013, the garden hosted its third year of Victory Garden classes, as well as an annual visit by 20 middle schoolers. Visit the garden at 1423 Crenshaw Blvd., LA 90019.
