My School Compost Rots!!

A little over a year ago, our school participated in a Trash Free Lunch Challenge.  The goal was to teach students to reduce waste in their lunch, and perhaps to make some changes.  When we finish our lunch, we sort it into appropriate buckets, with liquids going in one, recyclable items into another, one for the landfill, and one for compost.  That’s 500 students putting fruit, vegetables, pastas, and breads into a bucket for composting.  The cafeteria workers do the same when preparing food for the lunch table.  Those buckets are taken out to our garden by 5th graders and mixed with leaves or stable waste or whatever brown material we have, mixed occasionally and turned into bins.  When it seems to be done composting, it is sifted and put back into our garden.  My dad claims that we’ve put over 3,000 pounds of stuff into the compost, helping keep it out of the landfill.  All done by my friends, who range in age from 7-12.  If we can do it, you can too.  Last year, the bin reached 160 degrees and we even cooked an egg on it!
