How to Start a Community Garden

Are you interested in turning that vacant patch of land in your neighborhood into something useful, like a community garden?

At LACGC, we receive calls every day from people who have identified a vacant plot in their community and want to grow food on it.  We typically guide these inquirers to the “Start a Garden” page of our website at http://lagardencouncil.org/start-a-garden/ to answer some basic questions and learn more.

If you would like to start a new community garden, we recommend that you have:

1, Permission from the landowner to use the site at no cost
2. A volunteer group of at least five people to form a Garden Leadership Team and additional interest from local residents
3. Funds to build the garden.

These components are essential before you get too excited about your new community garden!

LACGC can then help you organize community meetings to understand what local residents would like to see on the identified site.  We can then work with a landscape architect to put their ideas into practice. And then, we can do what we enjoy doing most, which is organizing the community to open a new community garden where people can grow healthy food in their neighborhood.

Please let us know if you have a suggestion of a site for a new community garden!
