What You Need to Know When Creating a Beautiful Community Garden

  1. Locate land that is flat and sunny, with good soil. If you are struggling to find good soil but have located the right land, don’t worry, as good, rich soil can be cultivated over time.
  2. Identify those who want to participate in the garden, and spend a day creating the garden and separate spaces for each gardener. Use either scrap wood for a raised garden, or lawn edging, which you can read more about, if you plan to create a flat garden and dig up the ground within the identified space.
  3. As part of the community garden project, create a compost heap for the gardeners to access and contribute to over time.
  4. Identify an area near the garden where picnic tables can be added so that visitors (and gardeners) can enjoy a meal as they overlook the gardens. Also, add a trellis as a backdrop or side component to the community garden so that the space looks more contained and has added depth and dimension.
  5. Ensure that gardeners can commit to regular visits to their garden with ongoing maintenance. With multiple gardeners working in a small area, it is easy for weeds to creep up and spread to someone else’s area. This can become a quick frustration for the gardeners that need to spend extra time weeding vs. cultivating their plants, and can also erode from the overall look, feel, and experience that your garden is trying to create for the community.
