Community Gardens and Food Insecurity

A popular reason why community gardens are loved among the LACGC community is that people get to grow their own food.

Being able to grow the vegetables, herbs, and other products people use to make their meals is an incredibly satisfying process. It is not only better for the environment since you are obtaining what you eat locally, but it is also a great way to increase well-being and build a sense of community for people. Beyond the individual benefits for gardeners, community gardens can play an important part in solving food insecurity and food deserts in many communities.

For many people who have their own boxes, or for those who share a plot or tend to a communal space, contributing to a community garden allows them to obtain fresh produce at an affordable cost. Furthermore, the lack of affordable and quality grocery stores in many communities leaves these gardens as some of the only spaces that provide some members of the community with healthy and fresh options. This is why it is important to support local community gardens and the organizations that advocate for and with them (like LACGC).
