Seasons Greetings, Gardeners!

What a year it has been! As we move through the holidays, it’s a good time to keep in mind the implications of our actions as consumers. According to a study conducted in 2017 by Sundale Research, the USA collectively spent $12.7 billion on gift wrapping paper, tissue paper, and gift  bags, all of which are almost instantaneously destroyed. Unfortunately, most of these items contain shiny coatings, foils, and colors that make them unable to be recycled and end up in landfills. To help reduce this burden, consider some eco-friendly wrapping ideas, such as using old newspapers or magazines, old calendars or maps, reusable tote bags, or recycled brown paper bags. These can be customized with some art supplies. Using these tricks can help bring attention and flair to your packages, making your gifts extra unique.

The gift of giving is common across many religions and cultures. With this holiday season feeling heavier than others, it is important to show support where it counts. You can do this by buying locally, donating meals to local food banks, or supporting community gardens in your city! There are plenty of ways to go about the holiday season with a sustainable mindset that not only benefits us individually, but also and more importantly, impacts our communities and neighbors collectively. We at LACGC thank you for your generous support and resilience in 2020. We wish you a happy and safe holiday season and look forward to a prosperous 2021.
